Just last week, Pantone©, the world’s leading expert on color, released its Color Of The Year For 2019 – Living Coral. Each and every year, since 2000, the Pantone Institute studies colors and the impact they have on our society. According to Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of The Pantone Coor Institute, “Color is an equalizing lens through which we experience natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral. With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanizing and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone© Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”

By our own admission, many of us are caught up in the addictive world of digital technology and social media. According to Pantone©, it causes us to seek out authentic and immersive experiences that enable human connection and intimacy. That being said, the coral color is bright and comforting. It provides stability in a world that is a constantly shifting and changing. Some have gone as far to say the color symbolizes optimism, joy and playfulness, satisfying our need for things to be a little more lighthearted.

Coral is a warm and uplifting color, found easily throughout nature. A beautiful color for fabrics!

For wedding designers, the color is no surprise to us. Coral has been a welcome choice on wedding color palettes over the past few years. It is an ideal shade that adds warmth and vibrancy when paired with darker tones like navy blue or slate gray. It can also add that brighter splash of color contrast when used with neutrals, such as creams or taupes. It definitely works well when used with metallic accents of silver or gold (my personal favorite)!

One of the best things about this year’s color selection is that Living Coral is a color found easily throughout nature. While the majority of us aren’t going to be diving underwater to look for it (although the fish picture is kind of cute), it is a shade that we can easily find for wedding flowers, wedding stationery and bridal fashion. It is a color that looks good on a number of people, complementing skin tones, which makes it an ideal choice for bridesmaids gowns or accents for the groom and groomsmen’s accessories.

As a huge lover of flowers, I also really like that there are so many blooms available in this color from dahlias to peonies, roses to gerbera daisies, and more. Whether you want the more vibrant, more authentic coral shade, or more of a softer, muted tone, you have a number of options open to you to choose from that you can discuss with your florist.

There are a number of flower choices available in coral from roses (top left), dahlias (top right), gerbera daisies (bottom right), and peonies (bottom left).

It also is a wonderful choice for wedding stationery items. Invitations, ceremony programs, place cards – whether a background color or incorporated into the main font or design, is is a easy color choice to incorporate and envision.
